Leslie Townes Hope was born in Eltham, England on May 29, 1903. He was the fifth of seven sons belonging to William Henry Hope and Avis Townes Hope. His English father supported the growing family as a stonemason while his Welsh mother aspired to be a concert singer. In 1907 the Hopes moved to Cleveland, Ohio seeking the opportunities America offered for their large family. Thirteen years later, Bob and his brothers became U.S. citizens when their father was naturalized. In years to come, as a popular Hollywood entertainer, Bob Hope's exceptional service to his adopted nation became legendary. For generations he brought laughter to all, entertaining American presidents and unknown G.I.'s alike, even in the darkest hours.
