The collection spans Mr. Laird's distinguished career, especially from 1961 onward. Prominent topics include the 1964 Republican Party platform; the 1964,1968, and 1972 presidential campaigns; Congressional Republicans in the 1960s; the Vietnam War; a wide range of Defense Department procurement, planning, and policy issues, both regional and global; many domestic policies; Nixon White House efforts to avoid impeachment; and Mr. Laird's post-government activities. Material accumulated by the Social Entertainments Office including the memorandums, correspondence, invitations, entertainment programs, menus, guest lists, and seating arrangements for all of the social events at the White House, Camp David, aboard the Presidential yacht, and occasionally during State visits abroad. In addition, the Social Entertainments Office answered public requests for popular forms, handouts, and photos, as well as acknowledgement cards for such occasions as birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. Material concerning President Ford's service in the Navy during World War II and in the inactive reserve, 1946-1963, plus the history of the USS Monterey, the aircraft carrier on which he served in 1943 and 1944. Included are copies of his official Navy personnel file, Mr. Ford's own file of orders and correspondence, and materials on the Monterey sent to Mr. Ford by former shipmates.

The remainder includes invitations, extensive runs of press releases and press wire copy, and other routine documentation. Accretions of papers, consisting of handwritten notes from numerous meetings and briefings, additional press office subject files, and transcripts of Nessen’s audio diary have been added at the end of the collection.

Although the collection contains significant materials on numerous aspects of the campaign, the records are by no means complete as several senior staff members apparently removed files upon their departure from the Committee.
