These letters were received in the weeks and months following the interview and usually focused on the contents of the interview, frequently relying on religious arguments to explain their disapproval of her view on such topics as pre-marital sex and marijuana use. Occasionally, related newspaper clippings are enclosed with the correspondence. The public opinion mail in this series was acknowledged by the White House using form letters developed by the First Lady’s staff.
