This collection consists of a filing system shared by the White House East Wing staff, who assisted Betty Ford and the Ford children in their public activities. It includes Subject Files, Name Files, Chronological Files, and Bulk Mail Files that are comparable to the separate system used by President Gerald R. Ford and his staff in the West Wing. Correspondence with the general public comprise most, but not all, of the material. The material concerns views on public issues, expressions of support or criticism, holiday greetings, invitations, schedule requests, and plans, assistance requests and offers, and other matters.

This collection documents Milton E. Mitler's White House liaison activities with Bicentennial groups and Vietnam War Missing in Action/Prisoner of War (MIA/POW) groups. It also describes his occasional handling of White House meetings with veterans, educational, medical and religious organizations.
Mitler's major duty and the majority of his files concern his work on the American Revolution Bicentennial. Records document his work as liaison between the White House and the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration (ARBA), Federal agencies, and the general public. It also documents the handling of gifts received at the White House for the Bicentennial.
Materials on the MIA/POW issue document White House relations with organizations such as the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia, and attempts to locate information on servicemen still being held in Southeast Asia.

This collection consists of the personal papers of physician and academic Alexander M. Schmidt. The bulk of these papers document Schmidt’s time at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in his role as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. Included within this collection are hundreds of letters and memoranda to and from Schmidt, thousands of pages of administrative documents associated with the daily operations and ongoing projects of the agency; as well as several editions of the FDA Clipping Service circular and the FDA Consumer magazine.
This collection also contains materials from Schmidt’s time at the Regional Medical Program (RMP) Services within the National Institutes for Health during the late 1960’s and his career in academia when not in government service. As with the FDA materials there are hundreds of pages of correspondence, as well as books, scholarly articles, theses, dissertations, and research papers written by Schmidt’s contemporaries, as well as drafts of his own scholarly writings. There are also briefing books, memoranda, letters, and agenda of the several committees and boards in which Schmidt took part, either as a member or in an advisory role; there are court documents associated with litigation on decisions that FDA or other agencies and organizations made with reference to food and drugs. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and articles having to do with a wide variety of medical issues, as well as publications that were compiled that have articles associated with Schmidt, the FDA, or both.
This collection does not include materials related to Schmidt’s positions in academia at the University of Utah prior to 1967.
