The House Judiciary Committee, after 6 months of political and legal maneuvering and preliminary investigation, today formally opened its hearings on resolutions to impeach President Nixon.
“…but impeachment of a President is most drastic…”
Three new transcripts were released today at discussions between the President and H.R. Haldeman.
According to the transcripts, within six days of the break in, the President knew the burglars were connected with his campaign, knew that the operation was being financed by the Committee to Reelect the President, and finally, knew that the CIA was being pressured to provide a cover for Watergate.
Mr. Nixon asked the country to believe that he had not broken his constitutional oath, but the country didn't believe that. Its elected representatives in the Congress didn't believe that, and Richard Nixon was doomed.
