As Bob stood by watching, Dolores Hope christened the USNS Bob Hope (AKR 300) in May, 1997 in New Orleans. Thus the first in a new class of battleship was named after the former British subject turned American patriot. Not to be outdone, one month later the U.S. Air Force dedicated a new C-17 in Hope's name. (In 2001, the C-17 named "Spirit of Bob Hope" transported the pilots and crew of a U.S. reconnaissance plane downed in China back to Hawaii, safe and sound). |
