David Gergen

David Gergen, a former Nixon speechwriter, returned to the White House as special assistant to Ford's chief of staff, Richard Cheney in December 1975. His title was changed to Special Counsel to the President for Communications and until July 1976 his primary responsibility was drafting presidential speeches and statements. In July 1976, Gergen replaced Margita White as director of the Office of Communications and restructured the office to reflect its augmented responsibilities.
